Young People - Working With

Working with young people is a challenge.  It's usually because we don't understand them.  Often because we don't try.  Often because we don't use appropriate means of communications.  Councils looking for support for a project involving young people are invited to look at Groundworks Solent and their services.  CE ALC declares an interest at this point as a Trustee Director!

The Association has for a long time been a National Exemplar with its 'Totally Excellent Youth Council Handbook'. The electronic version is the third edition of this publication (and now known simply as 'The Youth Council Handbook'). The Handbook was first published with financial assistance in 1994 from East Hampshire District Council.

Its enduring and continuing usefulness are evidenced with just two remarks in a letter from a Youth Worker in Essex, dated January 13 2006:

"We would like to express our appreciation to the team who put this handbook together."

"The manual you have produced has been helpful at every stage (of forming a Youth Council)."

Comments from Wiltshire County Council, May 2007:

"Thanks very much. It will be helpful to have the highs and expected lows and how to deal with them as well as the obvious guidelines."

Ringwood Town Council has launched an innovative Student Advisor Scheme. the aim is to give young people a genuine chance to affect the Town Council's decision-making process.

Member councils might find a model Draft Child Protection Policy useful as a start-point for their own.  Advice should always be taken from the appropriate children's agency when working with children and young adults.
