Parish Lengthsmen were historically locally contracted labourers who walked the highways for 'the length' of the Parish.
The ALC believes that modern parish lengthsmen are a necessary requirement in every parish.
Tackling the little but irritating problems around verges such as sign cleaning, leaf clearing and removing vegetation, the lengthsmen are a resource that supports local quality of life. The Localism Partnership Lengthsmen Scheme 2012 takes in 43 of Hampshire's parishes across five projects. The Hampshire ALC has been proud to be the pivotal agency in gettting this project running through the Hampshire Total Environment Project. With primary partners the Hghways Authority and the ALC, the lead parishes are pushing the project forward in coordinating the resource. It is hoped the resources appended below are useful in administering the scheme. The lead for the project is currently Tristan Meekins at HCC. If parishes have any problems with the scheme, they are welcome to contact the ALC, who will support them with an answer or signpost them appropriately.
